What You Should Know About Types of Crib Bedding

Choosing crib bedding is so important in welcoming your newborn, both for her aesthetic and physical comfort and her safety as well. Of course you want to choose a pattern or design that's to your taste and to the dcor of the room, but getting the right types of crib bedding is important, too.
A quality mattress is the foundation for all other crib bedding. The mattress should fit snugly into the crib; there should be no opportunity for the baby to slip a hand or foot between the mattress and the bars of the crib. Almost all crib mattresses are waterproof these days (which is great news, it's much more hygienic for your child than sleeping on a soiled mattress).
Next, a waterproof mattress pad is in order. It's inevitable that your baby will have the occasional leaky diaper, episode of spit-up, or hard core teething and drool. A mattress pad will wick away the moisture from your baby's sensitive skin, averting skin allergies or rashes, while providing your child with an extra layer of softness between the mattress and the next layer, the fitted crib sheet.
In considering all types of crib bedding, perhaps the crib sheet is the most important. You want a soft fabric, something that your baby will want to lay her cheek against. All natural fabrics are also a good idea for fitted crib sheets. Newborns can have sensitive skin, and natural fabrics like cotton and cotton blends lessen the possibility that your baby may have an allergic reaction of some kind.
There are also crib dust ruffles, which slip between the mattress and metal support that holds up the mattress. These can protect inquisitive little fingers from sharp metal parts when the baby is playing outside the crib, out and about in his bedroom. Plus, a dust ruffle looks nice, especially if you're storing materials under the crib, either in an under-crib drawer or under-the-bed storage box.
And finally, you can add coordinating crib bumpers, which some people might consider optional. These padded rectangles tie onto the bars of the crib and help keep babies from putting arms and legs through the bars and getting stuck, possibly causing minor injuries. However, be aware that it is still possible for a baby's little arms and legs to slip under crib bumpers, between the bumper and the sheet. So while crib bumpers don't totally solve the problem of babies getting stuck in the crib, it does lessen the chance of it happen quite considerably. Crib bumpers also provide a layer of comfort for babies whose heads tend to loll toward the bars of the crib. Wouldn't you rather lay your head against something soft rather than solid wood?
While almost all types of crib bedding come with a small, crib-sized comforter, it's never a wise idea to include this or any other kind of blanket in a crib with your newborn. Comforters, blankets, and stuffed animals present a suffocation hazard, and may contribute to SIDS. A great alternative use for these adorable comforters is room decoration-- use them as pretty wall hangers, or drape them across a rocking chair for use at night while rocking your child.
So no matter what types of crib bedding you have in mind, make sure you've got all the basics to put together a comfortable, welcoming environment.

Choosing improper bedding can cause harm, injuries and in fact has been suspected as a possible cause in many cases of sudden death syndrome. Such cases has typically been pointed to a very soft mattress. A too soft mattress can cause the child's mouth and nose to be covered, leading to suffocation. Cribs are small beds that have high side walls or railings, and are normally square so you can get a mattress that perfectly fits their dimensions. Cribs are known to be more practical and economical choice for they can still be used until the child is around two years old. There are other items you may include inside a crib such as pillows, this can provide more comfortable feeling for your little one. However, there is a caution not to fill the crib with too many pillows or the baby can stand on them and fall and hurt themselves.
Cradles are small low beds that are typically mounted on rockers. Cradles are only good for infants. They usually come in a variety of shapes and sized. One advantage of the cradle is that it can be rocked to help soothe the baby, and they don't normally require much bedding.
