Hall Benches – Storage And Seating Has Never Looked Better
By Jesse Akre
Some furniture you never know you need until you have it in your home and can’t imagine life without it. For example hall benches are irreplaceable once you begin to use one. Not only do they provide a place to set your purse or rest for a minute and take off your shoes they also add a touch of classic style to your otherwise empty hallway.
Once seen outside a king’s or queens chambers presumably to offer those wishing an audience a place to sit and wait; hall benches have long been an important part of a home or castle’s décor. Whether they are made of smooth wood or have a soft upholstered seat you’ll be amazed at how useful they are.
Place one in your entrance hall and you have a place to set your purse and purchases. Some hall benches even come with a back panel equipped with hooks for hanging coats and bags and a mirror for checking yourself one last time before you go out the door. Others even have a seat that flips up to reveal extra storage space. Place one in the hall by your bedrooms and bathroom and those waiting to use the facilities won’t have to wait in line; they can sit. When it comes to hall benches the possibilities are endless.
And so are the styles. But you won’t find the best selection in your local stores; it will be minimal at best. Instead try shopping online and you’ll be amazed at the variety of styles and sizes of hall benches available and you’ll find the most reasonable prices as well. From French country style to Victorian cherry and warm wood to cool wrought iron you’ll easily be able to find a bench or tow that truly speaks to your style.
Maybe you want a basket type bench perfect for holding extra towels by the bathroom or blankets in the living room? Or perhaps you want a bright red bench with a drawer for each kid and hooks for their backpacks? If you are a thoroughly modern girl or guy you might like a quilted black leather ottoman bench with sparkling silver legs. No matter what your taste you are sure to find the perfect hall bench to access you décor.
Whether adding a focal point to your hall or entryway or just adding some additional seating to your living room or bedroom; hall benches are the way to go. From large wooden benches with gently curved arms to tufted ottoman benches that provide savvy storage, an extra seat and can be a coffee table as well you’ll find what you need online. And when you do populate your home with hall benches you’ll wonder how you survived without their seating and storage. Let one welcome you when you walk in the door and another give you a place to rest your tired bones.
Maybe one holds fuzzy blankets to curl up in on a cold winter’s night or is your place to stash your subscription to Tiger Beat? No matter where you put them there is nothing more welcoming than hall benches in your home.

Hall Benches – They Hold It All
By Jesse Akre
Storage is always a problem in homes. In fact, it’s probably the reason why American homes are getting so large. We’ve run out of room for all the stuff we own.
This isn’t surprising, given our penchant for getting more and wanting more. Pioneers used to carry everything they ever needed in a covered wagon and just made due. In contrast, we simply go out and rent storage units once we get so much stuff the three car garage can’t hold even a single car.
There are storage solutions that not only add extra space in your home, but are also less expensive than a cavernous storage unit that’s miles away from your home.
You may not have even realized it, but those halls in your home are the perfect place to add storage by way of hall benches. Not only do these benches offer you additional space to hide away your stuff, but they also offer additional seating whenever you need it.
Why are hall benches so popular today? Part of the reason is today’s home designs include wider halls. In the old days, halls were barely three or four feet wide. Their sole purpose was to provide passage from one living space to the next, such as a living room to the bedroom, which was always two doors down the hall, on the right.
In today’s more open floor plans, hallways are often additional living spaces. They can be quite wide, and that’s where the hall bench comes in particularly handy. With just a little imagination and some space planning, you can add hall benches throughout your home and use them to not only add beauty, but extra storage.
In fact, hall benches are essential in areas that have seasonal weather. Here, you can store winter mittens, hats, snow suits and wool blankets – the items you only need three or four months of the year but aren’t really storage unit material.
Even in temperate climes, hall benches can be particularly useful for storing beach blankets, snorkeling gear, inflatable floats, beach balls and other sunny weather essentials.
If you have children, you can use hall benches to store board games and other activities to keep the kids occupied on holidays, snow days or vacations. It’s also a great place to store building blocks, construction sets and all those accessories dolls come with.
An added bonus: Hall benches come in handy when the bathroom is occupied. Guests or the kids can settle in for the duration in the hallway, comfortable and cozy on a bench that was strategically placed nearby. It cuts down on the inevitable arguments about who was there first.
When purchasing a bench for your halls, be sure to keep the size of the hall in mind. You want to make sure the hall benches you select actually fit in the space. You don’t want the bench to overwhelm the hall. Rather, it should complement and enhance the area instead of consume it.
Finally, if you plan to use it for storage, make sure that the lid is convenient to open and that it won’t slam down unexpectedly on a child or your own fingers. Most hall benches have catch latches that prevent this, but older pieces, including many antique benches and chests, may not.

Hall Benches – Add Some Unexpected Seating To Your Decor
by
You may have noticed the trend. Homes are getting bigger and bigger and bigger these days. Today’s larger homes have so much square footage you may need to rest a spell in the hallway as you are trying to get around. You could prop yourself against the wall, get down on the floor, which means getting back up again, or go with the better option, having hall benches.
Ok, that is really not what most people use hall benches for, but it could be if you have one of those super mansions that require a map to find your way from the bathroom to the kitchen. For the rest of us, there are still practical and decorative uses for hall benches.
In the practical arena, if you entertain a lot, and often have a lot of folks needing to use the facilities, hall benches give them somewhere to sit nearby, rather than having to act like a vulture circling outside the bathroom door waiting for it to open. Hall benches with storage underneath can also be a place where extra towels and other toilet items can be stored for guests who will be staying a night or two. Hall benches near your spare bedroom can also offer an accessible location for extra blankets, sheets and pillows to be stored. Hall benches in the foyer offer a perfect place to sit down to take off your shoes, or boots if you have been out in the rain or snow. There is nothing more uncomfortable than trying to get tight, and possibly wet, shoes off of one foot while balancing on the other, or leaning against the wall. It is much easier when you can take your weight off both feet and focus on removing the shoe, not balancing.
On the more artistic side, there are a few good unique uses for hall benches in homes. Many homes today have at least on piece of fine art hanging on a wall. Hall benches across from this art can give your home a gallery feeling near this painting or sculpture, where people are given a chance to sit and reflect on the piece, contemplating it’s meaning, and appreciating that you are sharing the artwork with them.
Finally, hall benches can be part of your home décor. Sure they are a place to sit, but they can also be a beautiful addition to your country or rustic motif. Beautiful wooden hall benches that have been hand tooled with ornate detailing will be a showstopper as people enter your home and see it. If the back of the bench has railings, you can intertwine some bright and colorful silk flower vines through those rails, making these hall benches all the more charming and welcoming.
While once upon a time benches were just a place to wait for the next bus to come along and pick you up, they have come a long way. Now benches, like those for the hall, are a beautiful and practical part of decorating any home.
