When It Comes To Your Toddler Think Safety!
by Jesse Rosato
When it comes to your toddler there are hidden dangers lurking everywhere. Toddlers are busy exploring and learning. It's a wonderful time in their development. Just be sure to practice toddler safety! You should have gates on all stairs top and bottom, as well as on all exits if there is a risk. You should also make sure windows have locks on them so a child cannot open it, fall out, and seriously hurt themselves or worse yet.
It wasn't long ago where we heard of a young toddler who plunged to their death after falling out of a window of a fifth floor apartment. How tragic!
You also need to place latches on all your cabinets. Parents often place a latch on cupboards that hold cleaning products forgetting that other cupboards can pose hazards too. What about that hook on that bowl that your toddler is busy trying to break loose? It's a choking hazard. How about the sharp handle on the pot? It's a poking hazard. Play it safe and lock up all the cabinets.
Do not leave children unattended near a pool or pond. In fact make sure the fence surrounding the area is too tall for the child to climb over and that the gate is securely latched. How many times have we heard the tragedy of a toddler drawing in a pool because no one saw them wonder off. It only takes a second!
During a get together or birthday party make sure there is a designated adult to watch over your toddler. This may seem silly but it's not. Toddler's are curios little creatures and with all the activity and the excitement they can get themselves into trouble very quickly.
A lighter left down unintentionally, or a hot coffee sitting on the table, perhaps a bottle of medicine that's inside a purse resting on the floor. You just never know. If you take turns having an adult with your toddler at all times you will have a fun and safe get together.
Be sure that all plug ins have child safety plugs in place. Children like to poke things into holes and electricity is not a good place to play. Make sure that all electrical cords are hidden and out of the way of your toddler. Puppies aren't the only ones that like to chew on cords.
Make sure to always put medication away. Store it in a high medicine cabinet under lock. Even child proof tops can be opened by a determined and equivalent toddler. Never leave medications in your purse where a toddler might find them.
In fact never leave your purse in a position where your toddler might find it. There are other hazards in your purse such as nail files or coins just to name a few.
If you have guns in your home make sure they are stored safely. Make sure the ammunition is stored in a locked cabinet and the that chamber in the gun is empty and the firing pin removed. This is another tragedy we hear of far too often. A child finds a gun tucked under a bed or in a dresser and begins to do what toddlers do, check it out. The outcome is never pretty!
You need to be especially careful when you have company. All your best intentions can go to waste if a guest forgets to close a gate behind them. Guests aren't always accustomed to toddlers and may forget to close a gate or leave a breakable or a hot coffee within reach. When you have company be especially diligent to keep your toddler safe.
Keeping your toddler safe will be one of the most important things you do in your child's life. Keeping them safe is every parent's intent but sometimes the simplest things can be tragic.

The different types of baby monitors
by Dennis Jaylon
A new-born is never to be left alone. It is totally dependent on others and hence needs full time attention. So, no parents would like to leave their baby unguarded. If the baby is not sleeping, they can carry it with them and keep an eye on it. Problem arises when they want to be vigilant on the baby while it is sleeping. They have to waste their valuable time sitting lazily in front of the baby and wait until it is over with its nap. This is something no modern parent would like and probably cannot afford.
Then is there no way out to solve this problem! Don’t worry; there is an easy solution to this problem in the form of baby monitor. It will enable you to keep an eye on your baby and simultaneously carry out other important works that you cannot do away with. This is a rather cheap and easy to use device that functions in a simple manner. There are various types and qualities in this electronic medium of bond between babies and their parents.
Basically there are three kinds of baby monitor available in the market namely audio, video, and movement or breathing. The most popular kind is by far the audio monitor. It consists of a transmitter and a receiver that are to be placed in the baby's nursery. The receiver lets you listen to the ‘alerts’ if your baby starts to cry or shows signs of waking.
Video baby monitors let you keep an eye on your baby practically. If you are in the lawn or in the garden, you will be practically watching your baby through it. You can also get a breathing and movement monitor to ensure that your baby is sleeping safely. It is a sophisticated device that can sense if your baby stops breathing or shows other signs of sufferings, and alert you immediately.

How to Choose a Baby Monitor
by Tom Hackett
The baby monitor is a wonderful invention that allows you to listen for your baby’s cries or movements without actually going into their room. Baby monitors are very useful when your baby wakes up in the middle of the night. You can hear his cries when he needs feeding or changing. Baby monitors are also very helpful during the day when your baby is napping. They give you the freedom to go on the opposite end of the house, hang out laundry, etc.
Usually, a baby monitor is used by placing the transmitter close to your babies crib so it picks up his sounds. The receiver is then placed in the area that you will be in, such as next to your bed. Many brands of baby monitors are able to run off of batteries, this way they are portable and can be carried on your belt. Some models even have night vision cameras and lcd monitors so you can see your baby. This gives you added comfort knowing exactly how your baby is doing.
Movement sensors are another option. These work with a pad that is placed under your baby while they sleep. If no movement is detected, an alarm sounds. Some monitors even allow you to monitor your baby’s temperature while they sleep.
A monitor with more than one receiver can be handy as well. This way, one unit can be stationary and the other portable. The monitors can then be switched when the portable’s battery get low.
Sometimes you can’t hear your baby’s cries or movements due to noise or other children. In this case a monitor with a sound activated light is handy. You know immediately when your child is moving because the monitor will light up.
There are very few drawbacks to baby monitors. Sometimes, the signal of other baby monitors can be picked up if they are in close enough range. This also works the other way around, so always be aware of conversations when your monitor is on if your concerned about privacy. Sometimes cordless phones can interfere with the reception on your monitor as well.
Monitors with low battery indicators are also handy. If you use the batteries most often this is a good choice. When the low-battery light comes on it gives you plenty of time to replace then before they die completely.
When trying to decide on what bandwidth is best for you, first consider where you live. If you live in the country a wider bandwidth (up to 90MHZ) is great for better clarity. If you live in the city where there is a lot of interference such as cell phones, other baby monitors, portable phones, or cement walls, a lower bandwidth (40MHZ) may be a better option.
Regardless of what monitor you choose remember to always follow the manufactures instructions. Never put a baby monitor directly in your baby’s crib or where your baby can reach it. The cord can get wrapped around their neck.
Hopefully, having this great invention will make parenting just a little bit easier. Good luck!

Baby Care Products - What you should Look for in Baby Safety Products
by Tom Healy
Knowing what baby care products you should be looking for can be a troublesome and stressful experience for any new parent. Baby safety is very important, and the anticipation of the responsibility that being a new parent necessarily involves is usually coupled with being inundated with brochures, leaflets and books listing countless dozens of essential products that you will need to purchase and install.
A very important consideration for your new baby is the question of temperature. It is easy for small children to get very cold, particularly in their hands and feet, so make sure that you have plenty of baby clothes, rompers or sleepers, and items to cover the little extremities such as mittens and booties. It is important to make sure that your new baby's head is always covered, as a good deal of heat can be lost through the head, and for this reason a bonnet or hat is important. This is particularly true if your child is born during the winter months.
There has been much written about how to ensure that your baby is safe whilst sleeping in their cot or Moses basket. Make sure they sleep on their side or on their back and that you do not use pillows, duvets or loose toys, as these can easily cover the face of your baby, resulting in possible breathing difficulties. Keep in mind that cribs and cots must meet federal and ASTM standards, so if you purchase yours from one of the top manufacturers you can be sure that these are met.
It is also important to make sure that your baby is sleeping in a room which is of an appropriate temperature. There are a range of baby thermometers available which clearly indicate the optimum temperature for your baby's nursery. If the room is quite warm then it is important not to use polyester sheets, and to remove any plastic wrapping that may be around the mattress. Make sure that you have plenty of baby blankets, and warm slick suits or rompers, in case the temperature drops too low.
There are a tremendous number of baby safety devices available to help protect your baby from the various dangers that an average family home presents. From baby gates to door stoppers, from electrical output plugs to fireguards - the sheer number and variety can be overwhelming. But in thinking about baby care products it is easy to forget that many of these items might be better described as toddler care products. It will be several months before your baby stands any chance of being able to get anywhere near any of these household dangers.
For this reason it is usually advisable for new parents to focus on those products that are actually going to be needed in the first few days and weeks of your new baby arriving. Baths and bottles are of particular importance. As a mother, whether you have decided to breast-feed or bottle feed it is sound advice to have bottles and baby milk formula ready just in case.
You will also need to make sure that you have a way of sterilizing the bottles, and it may well be advisable to practice sterilizing and making up the bottles of milk. Make sure that your bottles are glass: Canada has banned the use of plastic bottles due the possible content of Bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate bottles, and many environmental organizations are suggesting that other countries should do the same due to its possible adverse effect on the endocrine system, responsible for the regulation of hormones in the body.
When it comes to transport, car seats are of critical importance and you will have to purchase this before you get baby home. If there is one baby care product that must purchase new it is this. This is not the time to take a chance on second hand goods, the history of which you do not know, and any child car seat could have been previously damaged without your knowledge. Also make sure to check the expiration date - yes, they have one - and that the seat is facing to the rear until your child is over one year old and at least 20 ponds, when he or she can be switched to a forward facing seat.
It is impossible to know for certain which baby care products your own baby will take to best. As long as you have purchased a good quality crib or cot, with appropriate sheets and blankets, a huge number of nappies and changes of clothes for the first few days and are confident in using the baby milk bottles and sterilizers, then the chances are that you will thoroughly enjoy the first few days of having your new baby, although in your sleep deprived state it is unlikely that you will
remember this!
It is often difficult for new parents to understand what baby care products they should purchase for their new addition to the family. The problem is not the range available, but knowledge of all the hazards presented to babies, and how to protect them from the risks these hazards present. Baby safety is specific to new babies that cannot help themselves should they be in trouble.

Choosing the Right Baby Gates for Your Home
by Kris H.
Baby gates come in all types from wood to metal and extra wide to extra tall. Whichever type you end up choosing for your home, it is important to remember not to depend on a baby gate as the sole means of supervising your baby. Nothing will keep your baby safe more than your own supervision over them. Just because a baby gate is installed does not mean that your child is 100% safe.
There are two main types of baby gates which you can purchase for the home. They include pressure-mounted and hardware-mounted. Pressure-mounted gates can be pushed into a doorway or hallway and usually come with 2 panels that adjust into place. These are typically used in doorways that lead from one room to another or at the bottom of stairs to prevent a child from climbing up. They are not recommended as a way to block the top of stairs. Over time pressure-mounted gates can lose their ability to stay secure and should be replaced. Once they lose this ability, they are easy to dismount, thus, the main reason they should not be used to block the top of stairs.
Hardware-mounted gates are the main gates used to block the top of stairs. Because they must be drilled into the wall or doorway, it is much more secure and makes it very difficult for a small child to dismount. The hardware-mounted baby gates typically come with an open and close feature that resembles a door. This makes it convenient for adults and older children to pass through.
Modern baby gates should be made from sturdy material and should not have sharp edges. You will find some modern gates with v-shaped openings but they are generally small openings. Beware of older baby gates of the past with the same v-shaped openings that are large enough for a child's head to fit through. You may find these old models at garage sales or passed down through the years. If you come across one, it's best to avoid them or discard them all together. It is probably best to avoid the newer v-shaped or diamond shaped openings in baby gates as even the smaller openings can be risky in the home.
Also be aware of baby gates with mesh panels. If you go this route, choose one with a fine weave rather than a wide one as a child could easily get caught in it or use it as a way to climb. The best baby gate to go with are probably those with vertical bars. Vertical bars take away the worry of a child trying to climb the gate. Make sure your baby gate does not have any parts that could break off. While this may seem like common sense that manufacturers should be aware of, many baby gates are still recalled due to easily broken parts. Before you purchase your baby gate, be sure to measure the width of the doorway as well as the required height to prevent your child from climbing over.
Tall baby gates and extra wide baby gates are available for hard to fit areas.

Home Safety for Toddlers and Small Children
by Mia Thompson
If you have toddlers in your home, then safety is obviously a big concern. They are big enough and mobile enough to go just about anywhere but they little to no understanding of how dangerous some things might be. So, you know that you need to toddler-proof your home but how do you go about it?
A great place to start is by placing ‘baby gates’ at the top and bottom of the stair case to prevent injuries. Be sure that you purchase a gate that is sturdy and can be easily fastened to the wall, railing or some other solid surface on or near the stairs. Even with a baby gate, never leave a toddler unattended near the stairs.
Next on the list to put child safety latches on all cupboard and cabinet doors the child could possibly reach. Remember, toddlers can climb! Pa extra attention the cabinets under the kitchen or bathroom sink or anyplace you store medicine, cleaning supplies, garden chemicals or poisons. In the garage or storage shed, store all weed killers and chemicals in a locked cabinet and place the key in a location where your child cannot find it.
When it comes to toddler safety, prevention is the best method. Store your child’s books and toys at their level so they do not have to climb to get to their favorite game or stuffed animal. If your child has a lamp, fan or other electrical appliance in his/her room, tuck cords safely behind furniture so the child cannot pull anything down on himself.
Avoid choking hazards by keeping young children away from small objects, pieces of toys, and small pieces of board games. Read manufacturer instructions for all toys and follow their guidelines. Buy only those toys and games that are appropriate for a child of a particular age. Place plastic safety plugs in electrical outlets so the child cannot stick his fingers in the outlet.
One aspect of home safety that is often overlooked is mildew and mold. Mildew and mold can cause serious illness and injury in adults and toddlers alike. Mold or mildew can be the cause of allergies and asthma in small children. Install a dehumidifier in any damp areas to mitigate the moisture in the air.
